      The Guest Editor Introduction

It has been over 10 years since the passing of our dear friend, colleague, and advisor, Asim O. Barut, who died in the autumn of 1994. Asim was a deep thinker and was keenly interested in the foundational aspects of physics in general and quantum mechanics in particular, and would be very pleased with this special issue the new journal, Concepts of Physics -- where frank discussions of this sort may take place. Asim was a prolific writer and a wonderful collaborator, and some of his friends and colleagues have gathered together to contribute a number of fascinating and insightful papers in his honor in this issue. It is interesting to note that, due to his extensive collaborations, papers on which he is listed as a co-author continued to appear until 1998, four years after his death. Even now, he is still lives on with us in spirit - although I know we all miss him very much in person.
